Last June, as graduating dentists marched down ceremonial aisles at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), one of our very own natives, Dr. Michael O. Williams represented Mississippi in an auspicious ceremony. Born in California but raised in Gulfport since the age of 3 as a true Southern gentleman, Dr. Williams was awarded the highest compliment any professional can receive: the accolades of professional peers.
Dr. Williams, a Gulfport orthodontist, received a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for "outstanding contributions to scientific excellence" from his colleagues in the UCLA Orthodontic Alumni Association. While Dr. Williams modestly admits that his philosophy is only one of many, it seems that Dr. Williams' practice ideas resonate deeply with clinical scholars around the world.
"The UCLA Orthodontic Alumni Association", according to its President Dr. Neal C. Murphy, "seeks to provide liaison, between the cloisters of Academe and the "real world', by translating salient scientific knowledge into everyday practical events. Dr. Williams' years of pioneering clinical research and patented inventions have has done this by moving teeth in a way that stimulates new bone formation, a biologic event thought to be impossible according to older dental philosophies. Dr. Williams has discovered a whole new area of science: alveolar orthopedics."
Prior to Dr. Murphy's scientific investigations, no orthodontists actually looked at tissue changes around Dr. Williams' methods. After studying the supporting tissues under a microscope, Dr. Murphy noticed that Williams-designed orthodontic appliances stimulate tissue changes that herald new bone formation.
"Thus", he explains, "Dr. Williams' methods produce an effect that is more orthopedic than dental. Not only does this seem to provide a larger smile by eliminating the need to take out healthy teeth but also creates a more stable, natural facial appearance which children can grow into."
"Dr. Williams preaches that beauty and health are synonymous. That is a 21st Century concept which we embrace in California and why Dr. Williams speaks for many of us in the academic world."
Dr. Murphy goes on, "Dr. Williams has carried an important message to patients and orthodontists around the world and influenced a new generation of clinicians under the logo of UCLA. That is very gratifying to his former teachers and a source of pride for many of his colleagues. So, in a fraternal way, we all share in his achievements.
Apparently the UCLA honor bestowed on Dr. Williams is not limited to California. Dr. Ron Cook an orthodontist in Lake Havaseau City, Arizona has used Dr. Williams' methods for 15 years and adds, "I can't practice without it." And, Dr. Brock Rondeau, an international orthodontic educator in London, Ontario Canada claims that Dr. Williams "…has changed the course of orthodontic care forever."
Dr. Williams' patients obviously agree and it seems that many of his peers in Mississippi also concur. Dr. Williams officially represents the state of Mississippi at the national level, through the American Association of Orthodontists.
